Ways Of Seeing is a documentary made in 1972 by John Berger. It teaches us how to analyze nude depictions of women in the European artistic tradition in a way no one has ever seen before. Burger discusses the first depiction of women from the story of ‘The Garden Of Eden’. He gives us the ability to see how the consciousness in the story of Adam & Eve was the result of the different ways men and women look at each other after eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge. Berger shows us a different perspective on the renaissance art in which Adam & Eve cover themselves with fig leaves, and states that there shame does not come from between them but from the people observing them (Berger stated: “she is not naked for herself, she is naked as the viewer sees her”). Berger uses this documentary as a way of subjecting the different ways of seeing a man’s point of view in the world in which women have a long history in western culture, which is the cause of gender differences, which continues to this day.
